Biography of Artist

"Dozens of animal skulls and bones are fashioned into something wondrous, as the two women connect through movement, vocals and a shared torment over their search for life among death. Opavska is like a magnet - drawing us in from the first second to the last."
- Kelly Apter, The Scotsman ★★★★

La Loba (Wolf woman) is inspired by a story passed through generations of storytellers in many different locations: A woman wanders through the countryside for years, building creatures out of the bones she carries around, bringing animals back to life. She encompasses both life and death. However, no one can understand how difficult and unbearable her destiny is for her. What if her powers last forever?

"Gripped by the sheer intensity and virtuosity of both performers … memorable for all the best reasons."
- Mary Brennan, The Herald ★★★★★

Winner of the Herald Angel Award (Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2014) and Dancer of the Year (Czech Dance Platform 2014), La Loba combines two art genres and two remarkable artists: dancer Andrea Opavská and singer Jana Vébrová, who, when collaborating, exhibit their unbridled energy, harmony and above all, power and intensity of expression. The key component of the performance is the music of Ivan Acher, which springs from the sound of natural matter such as bones, wood, strings and animal skins, melding with the haunting voice of Jana Vébrová to create an atmosphere akin to a ritual.

"The close, organic contact between music and dance exerts an almost magical spell over the stage. The bewitching voice of singer Jana Vébrová, in places almost indistinguishable from the growling of wolves, reverberates with such gusto that it is practically impossible to look away."
- Linda Dušková, Radio Wave

Existential questions, urgent topics relating to Man's relationship to animals and the environment, as well as playing with reality and fantasy are characteristic of the creations of Lenka Vagnerová & Company.

Sean says:

"What a visual and aural treat this piece is! This is such refreshingly imaginative storytelling which is rich, haunting and liberating."

Relationship to Art and the Animal

La Loba (Wolf Woman) looks at transience and rebirth, and is a testimony of the violence we commit against animals. Animals have emotions, they feel pain, they are mothers like us, they are part of our planet and they have the same rights just as we do. Despite all this, people are able to torture them ruthlessly, exterminate them for pleasure or business, and occupy and destroy the natural habitat of wild animals. We take life, but we don't know how to restore it. Even young children should learn to listen to animals and respect their environment. This is what I miss in our today's society. La Loba presents a mythical woman connected with nature and animals voices which resemble those from our world.
